Individual Health Insurance

WHEN CAN I ENROLL?

New Mexico Health Connections will end coverage on December 31, 2020.
Presbyterian will offer only one plan in 2021

Currently, individual health insurance plans are offered without any pre-existing condition exclusions. There are no medical questions to answer. You can change plans every year during the open enrollment, November 1 through December 15. Plans go into effect on January 1 following the open enrolment period.

In addition to the annual open enrollment period, there are special enrollment periods that allow you to enroll throughout the year. Generally, when one of these conditions applies, you have 60 days from the qualifying event to enroll in a plan. The following is a partial list of those qualifying events:

  • Got Married
  • Had a Baby
  • Gained/became a Dependent
  • Got Divorced or Legally Separated and Lost Health Insurance
  • Death
  • Changed Your Primary Place of Living
  • Had a Change in Income
  • Denied Medicaid/chip
  • Gained Citizenship or Lawful Presence in the U.S.
  • Was Released From Incarceration (Detention, Jail, or Prison)
  • Did Your Employer Offer to Help With the Cost of Coverage Either Through an Individual Coverage HRA (ICHRA) or a QSEHRA?
  • Are You a Member of a Federally Recognized Tribe or an Alaska Native Corporation Shareholder?

1 DIRECT WITH THE CARRIER

If you do not qualify for a Tax Credit, then the easiest way to enroll is direct with the insurance carrier. This enrollment method does not require any financial information to be given to the insurance carrier. Once you have determined which plan you wish to enroll in, it takes about 20 minutes for us to enroll you in the plan of your choice. Your enrollment will roll over from year to year.

2 THROUGH THE MARKETPLACE

When we enroll you in a Marketplace plan, you are enrolled in the Federal Exchange. This type of enrollment requires projecting your income for the current year that you are enrolling in. You will need to make a good "guess" on what your current year's Modified Adjusted Gross Income will be. Once you have that amount, we can plug those numbers into the Kaiser Calculator to get a rough idea of the tax credit you will be eligible for.
